July 12, 2011. While the South Coast has gone a bit quiet in the Sardine Run 2011, there has been quite a lot of action at Durban’s beaches today.
Five nets were reported taken between Ushaka Beach and South Beach, yielding about 400 baskets of fish.
There is activity along the north coast – at Sheffield Beach there is fish activity – but it seems to be offshore, so netters are unlikely to access that, according to the KZN Sharks Board report.
“Things have gone very quiet on the South Coast, with only a few pockets of sardines off Umdoni. Along the Wild Coast, it is still very busy off Waterfall Bluff, but that fish all seems to be moving south,” said the Sharks Board’s Mike Anderson Reade.
“The shark safety gear had been replaced at some of the Durban beaches, but have since had to be removed again due to that sardine activity. However, shark safety gear has been reinstalled at Amamzimtoti Main beach and Margate Main beach,” said Anderson-Reade.
