St Mary’s DSG: Fostering Independence and Leadership Skills

By Mums Mail Magazine29/10/20193 Mins Read

St Mary’s is a school with many traditions and a strong sense of history and identity.

The school values speak for themselves and are the cornerstone of who they are:

Belief – In God, in purpose, and in yourself
Generosity – Being generous with your time, talents, words and in service to others
Respect – For yourself, and those around you – creating a place where everyone can belong
Kindness – Being compassionate, kind and caring – in words and actions
Curiosity – Cultivating the curiosity to explore the unknown and embrace diversity
Integrity – Honouring what it means to be honest, sincere and principled

At St Mary’s it’s more than what they teach, it’s how they teach and each phase is specifically tailored towards an all girls’ environment.

The Senior Primary supports the growth and development of the whole child, offering a balance of academic, sporting and cultural activities while inculcating strong values and a desire for each girl to achieve her personal best through the school’s EQ and Growth Mindset programmes. They aim to prepare the girls for a future that embodies change, by encouraging them to grow their independence and leadership skills, as well as to learn through self-discovery in a 21st Century learning environment, incorporating critical thinking, curiosity, creativity, collaboration and co-operation.

Emotional Intelligence
The rapid change of the workplace over the past 30 years has required people to become more resilient, open-minded and committed to lifelong learning. As a school, St Mary’s has intentionally made this part of its “hidden curriculum”. Being a girls’ school presents unique opportunities for the school to focus on understanding oneself and others. They enable them to develop perseverance, self-control and collaborative skills; all of which are associated with high personal and academic success.

Coding and Robotics
The world is changing around us, and as technology becomes more interwoven in our lives St Mary’s has seen the need to adapt their curricula to embrace these changes. The St Mary’s Creativity Centre (CC), which is a large part of the Primary School’s programme, has been years ahead of its time. The development of “Makerspaces” or the “Flexible Learning Environment” is attracting much attention internationally. This trend of combining subjects and doing more cross-curricular, project-based work is what the CC has been doing for many years. Added to this is the incorporation of coding into the IT programme and in Grade 8 and 9. IPads are part of the girls’ exposure to integrated technology usage and working in a Wi-Fi environment is no longer a novelty: it is now a necessity.
