Thousands of striking municipal workers are expected to march in Durban on Wednesday, said Independent Municipal and Allied Trade Union (IMATU) president Stanley Khoza. “We are expecting about 4 000 workers to take part in the march in Durban on Wednesday morning,” he said.
A march by SA Municipal Workers’ Union (SAMWU) members in Durban last week turned ugly when protesters burned rubbish bins in the city centre and shop owners were forced to close.
SAMWU and IMATU members have demanded an 18% wage increase while the SA Local Government Association (SALGA) has offered 6.8%.
On Monday, strikers blocked roads leading into Pietermaritzburg and caused damage in Amamzintoti, with rubbish and broken grass strewn along Kingsway. The strike has also severely affected garbage collection, with uncollected refuse seen in a number of neighbourhoods.
