Posters, Charts and other Teaching Aids for South African Teachers and Parents
With schools reopening next week, our focus shifts from holidays back to our children’s education needs. SA Teacher Things creates teaching aids that can be used by teachers or parents who homeschool. They are fun and relatable for the kids. Even parents who don’t homeschool might consider buying some of their posters to stick on their children’s bedroom walls.
Shannon Lee Archary is a foundation phase educator who loves baking and the antics of her seven-year-old pupils. However, finding relatable resources to teach them was nearly impossible. As a teacher, she wanted to ensure her learners could relate to the teaching aids used, but this proved to be a cumbersome, time consuming and expensive task. She found that most teaching aids were Americanised and unrelatable to the children. In addition, they were hopelessly unaffordable on a teacher’s salary!
So, after many months of frustration and google searches, Shannon decided to rather make her own teaching aids. At first, this was just to teach her own class, but as more teachers and parents enquired, she started customising her products.
“It’s important that a child is taught correctly the first time – so the font, the size of the information and relatable pictures are important elements in teaching aids,” says Shannon, “It brings me great joy to know that I am producing work that impacts and educates our children at their most fundamental educational moments. Given the right tools, every child can learn and every teacher can teach.”
In the South African education system where there are large classes and limited time a teacher can spend with a learner; these charts can be used by parents to embed their child’s learning experience during the day.
The most popular products are:
- DIY Velcro weather chart, consisting of months of the year, days of the week, seasons and a calendar
- Alphabet and Number Frieze
- Maths charts from 2D Shapes to Fractions
- Parts of speech
Shannon’s teaching aids are geared toward South African learners and teachers and the products are customisable according to the needs of a parent or teacher. They are available in English, Afrikaans or isiZulu on request.
“My aim is to provide teachers and parents with easy-to-use and understand resources to give their children and learners the added advantage. It is critical for the students to grasp the fundamentals of their subjects and interpretation at any grade to ensure successful learning,” explains Shannon.
“In my time teaching, I have noted that if a learner fails to grasp these concepts, their schooling career can by hampered by learning challenges and thus, my desire as a teacher – to enhance my learners’ learning experience, to give them the best possible opportunity to succeed.”
