Keeping local rivers clean
Going the extra mile with our local rivers is what the Keep Kloof Beautiful Association (KKBA) has done, together with local schools, GCS Consultants, eThekwini Municipality, Umgeni Water, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, the Duzi Umgeni Conservation Trust, the Department of Water and Environmental Affairs – a real collaborative effort!
People have long complained about the state of the rivers, the bad stuff that goes into them and the alien vegetation that often clogs them and stops the river flow.
But thanks to KKBA’s proactive stance, their ongoing Molweni River Health project is proving to be a resounding success – 34 pupils from seven local high schools collected samples at four points on the Molweni River and three of its tributaries.
Sponsorship was received from Jonsson Workwear (gumboots) and Waterfall SPAR (lunch packs for pupils).
Schools say the campaign was a great learning experience for their pupils. The sample information will also be useful for communities in the catchment area. Initial indications are that the rivers and streams are in a poor to fair condition with only two sites rating as “good”.
