October 10, 2011. There’s nothing better than waking up “Vris-early” on a chilled Spring morning, jumping into your car and heading out for a drive. If you’ve got friends and family in tow, all the better.
Of course, no drive out would be complete without the standard stop at Wild Bean Café for their ubercool coffee; then you’re set and it’s time to hit the road.

One of my favourite Cresty routes is to drive up to Shongweni, hang a right up Kassier road, then turn left towards Kearsney College, through Botha’s Hill and on towards Inchanga. Lovely, winding road, and so much to see on the way.
Here are some highlights: Pop into the sports club at the polo grounds in Shongweni for coffee and breakfast. Yummy! Why not a quick visit to Dieters for their indigenous plants range (I’m “mal” over cacti and anything that doesn’t gobble water!); lunch at Falcon Crest on a Sunday; The Pot and Kettle at Botha’s Hill (always packed); The Bird Park at Botha’s Hill; or why not be a complete rebel and keep on driving through to Inchanga, hit the highway and carry on to the raptor park near Maritzburg (African Bird of Prey sanctuary)? Wow, that’s a great show.
My pick would be to pop into Embo Craft and buy one of the magical crafts produced by community artists. You’re helping to develop local artists, while also getting something groovy for the home. Lovely range of printed T-shirts as well. Note, they’re not open on a Sunday, see website for details.
Go on, maybe pack a picnic and hit the road this Sunday.

I love the view at the Pot and Kettle, but it’s always so busy. What about Phezulu?
There used to be that cool hotel near the train station at Inchanga. But I believe it’s closed down. I enjoyed a few nice lunches there.
What a fantastic idea, especially with the weather we’re having! I love the view from PheZulu – and there’s the added bonus of spotting crocs. I’ll let you know if I find any new gems along the way.
