In an effort to encourage employees to give back to the community, Transnet’s Group Chief Executive, Brian Molefe proposed the Transnet Volunteers for Villages campaign in which employees share their skills and knowledge with the communities they live in.
The main objective of the Transnet Volunteers for Villages campaign is for staff to share their skills with communities so that the communities can uplift themselves using the newly acquired skills. With the assistance of the municipalities in Durban, Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth, the most needy communities were identified in these areas. In the long run, Transnet we will share skills ranging from gardening and handwork to wellness, financial planning and legal advice, all provided by the Transnet employees.
KZN focus
In Durban, the Transnet employees voted to support Inanda. On 15 November, about 200 Durban-based Transnet employees set off to Inanda to launch the three-year campaign by renovating Mandla Kayise Primary School. In the near future, Transnet will get involved with other organisations, schools and businesses in Inanda in an effort to uplift the entire community.
After three years the Transnet Volunteers for Villages campaign will move to another community to expand on their efforts on skills and knowledge share.
