South African colours for big wave stars
Local big wave surfing superstar Grant “Twiggy” Baker and Capetonian Chris Bertish, who in February this year pulled off a stunning victory at the Mavericks Surf Contest in California, USA, were honoured with Springbok Colours at the South African Surfing Awards recently.
Baker and Bertish were both stoked to receive this rare honour from the national sports body and received a standing ovation at the awards evening held at Suncoast Casino on July 4.
Baker is known for his fearless and competitive surfing at big wave hot spots around the world, including Mavericks and Dungeons in Cape Town, where he has previously won the Red Bull Big Wave Africa competition. It’s amazing what Twiggy and Chris have achieved in big wave surfing . . . they’ve got amazing passion for the sport.
