A winter holiday in Umhlanga doesn’t get better than this! Umhlanga Tourism will be hosting the annual Umhlanga Winter Carnival over four days on the main Umhlanga Beach and surrounds from 5 – 8 July, in association with eThekwini Municipality and ABI (Powerade and Coke).
Daily activities will have beachgoers basking in the winter sun whilst families will be entertained with a variety of fun games on the stage and beach from 10am until 2pm. The beach activities for young and old will keep everyone entertained, with Kevin Ellis on the mic, talent competitions, kiddies sing-alongs, face-painting and games – this will be taking place on Umhlanga Main Beach.
On Friday 6 July from 6pm, jazz connoisseurs will be able to listen to Beat-Route – Durban’s very own traditional funky swing jazz combo – performing in the partially closed Chartwell Drive. The band features the inimitable and highly respected giant of the jazz guitar Gerald Sloan on guitar and vocals, the warm mellow tone of Daniel Sheldon on trumpet and percussion, Tony Muirhead on drums and Logan Byrne on the upright bass. Joining Beat-Route not for the first time is the incomparable Melvin Peters on keyboard – a consummate musician and one of KZN’s finest and most respected jazzmen.
Athletes and sporting adventurers will be reaching for their trainers to compete in the Umhlanga Winter Tail Run and Walk on Sunday 8 July – departing from the Umhlanga Sands Resort at 6:30am. The early morning sunrise run will take runners on a 17km run or 12km run or walk through some of the most gorgeous terrain surrounding Umhlanga. Entry forms are available from selected sport stores or from durbantrails@gmail.com or online at www.umhlangatourism.co.za.
The magnificent winter destination of Umhlanga is hard at work getting ready for the July holidays and have planned a wonderful, participative line-up to keep visitors entertained with the Umhlanga Winter Carnival.
