Cricket umpiring great Dickie Bird is calling for immediate action to stop youngsters hanging bras and knickers from his statue.
The bronze statue of Bird – which shows him with his right finger raised, in the “You’re out” position – was put up in his honour in his home town Barnsley.
Bird, 77, wants to meet the local council to ask them to raise the plinth a few feet to solve the problem. The statue has become a target for enthusiastic young partygoers who have hung bras, knickers and even pizzas from the finger while posing for pictures.
Bird was regarded as the best umpire of his day and stood in 66 Test matches and 69 One Day Internationals. – Ridge Correspondent
