Outgoing Springbok captain John Smit dropped in to Unilever, Durban on Wednesday to say goodbye to the staff and management who had supported him through the World Cup.
“I’m disappointed to be here,” said Smit, referring to South Africa’s exit from the Rugby World Cup at quarterfinal stage. “We tried our best, but that just wasn’t good enough.”
Unilever director Marijn van Tiggelen handed over a cheque for R10 000 for a charity of John’s choice – in this case, BobbiBear, which works with children in the Durban area.
He has accepted a two-year contract with UK team Saracens and leaves SA as the most capped captain EVER, with a total of 111 games in the green and gold. “For those who believe in the rule of Nelson, there you go… Out on 111,” he joked.
Smit was leaving for Joburg on Friday, from where he’ll head to London and his new club!
