After numerous comments and complaints, Councillor Rick Crouch investigated the current roadworks in central Kloof, returning with this information.
The excavation at the bridge opposite Field’s Centre was required due to heave in the subgrades when the upper pavement was recycled. This was an unforeseen circumstance and had to be remedied. Upon excavation it was found that the materials at about 900mm depth were unstable and were quite moist. This led to the cracking of the recycled base during the compaction process.
This has been tackled in half width at a time. However, the process to remove and replace the materials due to the restricted area is a slow one. A dump rock pioneer layer is being placed to stabilise the embankment and it had worked very well on the left hand lane. This area should be complete by the end of June.
The remainder of the paving will be completed together with the area at the above mentioned excavation site. The completion of the paving in the other areas was delayed to reduce establishment costs. All the asphalt paving should be completed by the end of the first week in July.
What remains thereafter is the kerb and channel and sidewalks and cleaning of the site. Progress is slower than expected due to the supply of kerbing and demand on resources.

Who the heck complains seriously – Be thankful the council is upgrading the roads in Kloof, there are plenty areas which havn’t had maintenance in decades. Its a short time of inconvenience then brilliant roads for the next 10 years.

I am very grateful that we are having our roads upgraded. The whole project is being well handled and the inconvenience is really not that serious, however the benefit for us is enormous.
