uShaka celebrates National Marine Week

By The Ridge Magazine03/10/20142 Mins Read
Adelie penguins on the Antarctic Peninsula– the Antarctic is their only home and it seems they are fighting with gallant pluck against overwhelming odds.

National Marine Week is celebrated in the second week of October and is dedicated to creating awareness about the marine and coastal environments in order to promote sustainable use and conservation of these resources for the benefit of both present and future generations.

Although this is something uShaka does on a daily basis, it’s great to have the support of the nation in focussing on the marine world for a whole week.

This year uShaka is focussing on encouraging South Africans to vote with their wallets. As a nation, we are realising more and more the power we have as consumers in forcing industries to make changes that include sustainability as one of their core values.

uShaka Sea World is a proud partner for sustainable seafood in South Africa and encourages visitors to come down to uShaka Marine World during Marine Week to learn more about MSC (Marine Stewardship Council), an international certification and eco-labelling programme for sustainably caught seafood and SASSI (South African Sustainable Seafood Initiative). MSC promotes the support of fisheries who use good management practices and restaurants and supermarkets who serve seafood from sustainable sources.

It’s now so easy for supermarket shoppers to make the right choice when purchasing seafood.  All consumers need to do is look for the MSC logo bearing the little blue tick when shopping for frozen and tinned fish. This guarantees you that the fish you are purchasing was sustainably caught.

From Monday to Sunday visitors to the Village Walk are encouraged to visit the Marine Week stand outside Dangerous Creatures where they will have a chance to chat to scientists and marine educators and learn about SASSI and MSC accredited fish and why some fish are more green than others.

As a special treat on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, chefs from the Cargo Hold restaurant will be demonstrating various recipes using fish listed on the green list from midday to 15h00.
