VEMA, the Highway area’s Voluntary Emergency Medical Assistance team, has been given a fresh new uniform, compliments of Imperial Armour.
“This is wonderful, as VEMA’s original colours have always been green and it is the international medical colours,” said Shannon Charles, VEMA medical operations manager. “We have also used this opportunity to blend in with our surrounding environment and have become our own unique team. We are delighted.”
Imperial Armour is run by a team of strong women, lead by managing director Louisa Garland-Els, who was recently presented with the “Top Gender Empowered Company in South Africa” and is a finalist in Top Business Woman in South Africa for 2011. The firm was excited to be presented with this opportunity to support the VEMA team. Louisa said, “We were all too happy to support such an incredible group of people. VEMA is an amazing organisation and deserves it.”
VEMA was founded on 1 February 2005 by Mark Easton (Intermediate Life Support Paramedic and High Angle) and Derek More (Basic Life Support Paramedic), together with two other paramedics in Hillcrest, KZN. They decided to pool their resources and expertise to respond to medical emergencies within the Outer West Council area of Durban. As the area has developed, a number of other qualified persons have joined the team, which is now made up of nine members, all operating on a volunteer basis.
VEMA provides a high quality, first response medical service, as a prelude to the arrival of full-time emergency services, so that patient outcome is improved.
