Yes, You Can Reverse Sun Damage

By Mums Mail Magazine26/09/20183 Mins Read

If you’ve been watching Mooimaak, KykNET’s most exciting makeover show you’ll know the Skin Renewal team can work miracles when it comes to turning back the hands of time. Their expertise was evident when it came to treating one of the show’s recent transformation patients, Patricia Viviers.

A 52-year old widow who once had to hold down three jobs to support her children, things weren’t always easy for Patricia, but her family’s love and a passion for the great outdoors got her through the hard times, although she did neglect her skin and garnered a lot of sun damage. Fortunately, the Mooimaak team – which included Skin Renewal’s Dr Andre Truter and therapist Bernice Crause – could help her reveal a more youthful-looking complexion with a series of life-changing treatments over a period of three months.

Patricia’s treatments

Lasers: CO2 fractional laser, Limelight laser and Laser Genesis
Light: Photo Dynamic Therapy
Injectables: Dermal fillers, botulinum toxin, carboxytherapy and Xela Redermalisation
Extra: Jett Plasma eye rejuvenation and Body Renewal medical weight loss program

Turning back time

Patricia’s sun damage presented as severe pigmentation, a loss of volume and skin elasticity so Dr Truter tackled it using a multi-pronged approach – using three different lasers as well as Photodynamic Light Therapy and carboxytherapy.

Of all the laser treatments, the CO2 fractional laser was the most intensive as it removes the outer layers of damaged skin and requires between seven to ten days of downtime. Still, the results really are worth it. Not only does the laser dramatically improve the look of pigmentation, but it also stimulates new collagen production that minimises deep wrinkles and scarring.

Making magic with injectables

Another way the Mooimaak team stimulated Patricia’s natural collagen production was via carboxytherapy. This involves injecting carbon dioxide (CO2) gas just beneath the skin’s surface to induce a mega-boost in circulation that encourages new collagen growth.

Other injectables that made a visible difference included dermal fillers to plump up her lips, fill the lines around her mouth and restore volume to areas in which it was lacking and botulinum toxin to relax the wrinkles on the upper half of her face.

About that body

The Mooimaak team didn’t just rejuvenate Patricia’s face. They addressed her body too, starting with a skin-plumping Xela Redermalisation treatment to improve the severe dehydration, lines and pigmentation on her chest and neck.

Patricia was also put on a medical weight loss programme, the 5D Body Renewal Diet. It involves an eating plan, taking supplements and administering HCG injections to treat the resistance to leptin, the hormone that tells us that our body is full. Patricia found the diet very easy to follow and will be the first to tell you it was ‘so worth it’, having lost 15 kilograms in just three months!
