Q&A with Point-S Hillcrest’s Angie and Warrick Frederic
Meet the owners of your local family-owned and run Point-S Hillcrest; husband and wife team Angie and Warrick Frederic. Angie has been in the tyre industry for over 16 years – both in manufacturing and retail – giving her a wealth of knowledge, while Warrick has a long history as a successful entrepreneur in the transport and logistics sector. The couple has owned their tyre shop in Oxford Village for over five years.
Tell us about the brand changes you have made?
We strongly believe that independent tyre store owners can only survive by teaming up together, because together we are stronger. The Point-S business model is just that. Although we are currently only one tyre fitment centre, we benefit from a collective buying power as a group. This buying power allows us to be competitive in the market with quality products – where the focus is not only on tyres alone, but on related safety critical components such as brakes, shocks, suspension components, windscreen wipers and batteries. The Point-S business model is a win for both us and our customers.
Can you tell us more about the Point-S brand?
Originally a French tyre dealer association created by independent business entrepreneurs in 1971, Point-S is today the biggest independent tyre dealer network in the world – with over 5 669 stores in 46 countries. The brand is not owned by a tyre manufacturer, and in 2012 12 tyre dealers brought the Point-S brand and concept to South Africa. On 1 October, 2021 Point-S Hillcrest became the 80th store in South Africa. Since then the group has grown to 85 stores.
What is your service offering at Point-S Hillcrest?
We offer our customers multiple brands of tyres at competitive prices. We also have a value-for-money house brand – exclusive to the Point-S group. We supply and fit Sabat/Willard batteries, which come with a 25-month warranty – excellent value for money. We also supply and fit brakes, shocks, and wheels. We only use reputable brands. Our labour charge is extremely competitive.
Tell us about the Training School that you run from the shop?
We train candidates for a career in the tyre industry. We receive funding from merSETA, which means we can offer these courses to unemployed people free of charge. It has been rewarding giving back to our community in this way.
What is your association with the Reach for a Dream foundation?
For the last two years, Tyrelife Solutions and Point-S Hillcrest have been the main sponsors of a Reach for a Dream Golf Day held at Cotswold Downs. This year we raised R220 000 – which will be used to make dreams of terminally ill children come true. Next year’s Golf Day will be in September.
Tell us about your specials running over this festive season?
We are overly excited about our buy 4 tyres get 1 free special; it’s one of the reasons we have brought the Point-S brand to the Upper Highway area. The Continental special on 17inch and above – buy 4 tyres get 1 free – is running until 15 December while stocks last.
