Twenty one people were injured after a fully laden taxi overturned on the N3 Durban bound near the M13 turn off this morning. And reports are now coming in of a truck on fire near Mariannhill on the N3 Durban-bound. Apparently traffic was backed up to Shongweni.
ER24 paramedics who were travelling towards Durban had just got to the top of the Key Ridge this morning when they came across the accident. The taxi was lying on its side in the centre medium and there were people stuck underneath. The paramedics, along with the members of public, pushed the vehicle back on to its wheels to try to save the trapped commuters.
One person, unfortunately, had already lost his life in the collision. Two people were in a critical condition and needed advanced life support intervention. They had sustained massive trauma and needed to be intubated and placed on a ventilator to help them breath. They were stabilised and transported to Albert Luthuli Nkosi Hospital in a critical condition where specialised trauma staff were waiting for them.
Seven commuters sustained serious injuries. They were stabilised and taken by road to various hospitals in the greater Durban area.
It’s unclear what caused the driver to lose control but the necessary authorities from all departments were on the scene and would be investigating the accident further.
