£660 000 speeding fine

By The Ridge Magazine13/08/20102 Mins Read

Here’s something South African speed cops might want to initiate. Apparently under Swiss law, the level of a speeding fine is determined by a combination of the driver’s wealth and the speed recorded. Which explains why a certain Swedish driver who was bust while driving at the hairblowing speed of 288km/h has to kak and betaal a world-record speeding fine of £660 000.

Orange News reports that the 37-year-old, who has not been named, was clocked driving his Mercedes sports car at more than twice the 120km/h limit. In January, a fellow Swiss driver was fined £185 000 – the previous world record.

Local police spokesman Benoit Dumas said of the latest case that “nothing can justify a speed of 290km/h”.

“It is not controllable. It must have taken 500m to stop,” he said.

The Swede’s car – a Mercedes SLS AMG – has been impounded and in principle he could be forced to pay a daily fine of £2 200 for 300 days.

Perhaps our authorities should start levying fines according to the drivers’ bank balances. When you think about it, it’s always guys in super fast, super expensive cars who think they’re above the law and break the limit . . . not Mother Grundy in her Toyota Tazz. – Ridge Correspondent

Extremely tired of those boy racers hogging our roads. Bring on the hefty fines I say.
