There are many exciting developments in Early Childhood Development (ECD) in our country! The National Integrated Policy for ECD (March 2015) acknowledges the critical importance of the early years and states that by 2030 all young children, from birth to the year they enter Grade R will have access to appropriate, quality ECD programmes. To support this vision the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) has been developed and this provides national guidelines for those offering ECD programmes.
The National Policy for ECD also acknowledges the pivotal role played by the teacher. It is exciting that for the first time in South Africa recognition is being given to the training and working conditions of preschool teachers. All those working with young children will be required to have a relevant ECD qualification with preference being given to qualifications at NQF Level 5, the Higher Certificate and National Diploma in ECD.
These latest developments in ECD energized and inspired Caversham Institute to continue offering excellence in ECD teacher training. The Institute has designed and had approved a nine-month elective course that specializes in “Teaching & Learning Birth to Five”. This course forms a component for credits toward the Higher Certificate and National Diploma in ECD (Qualifications 23117 & 23118). It is offered on a part-time basis allowing students to teach during the week and obtain a national qualification on Saturdays.
This elective, that includes the guidelines for the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) was welcomed as it was piloted in 2017. Students, many of whom are experienced preschool teachers expressed delight and gratitude as they gained a deeper uunderstanding of how very young children develop a sense of well-being, identify and belonging. There was fascination at the types of activities that can be offered to babies, toddlers and preschool children to stimulate the development of language, mathematics, creativity and an understanding of the world.
