The Schlesinger Theatre, Michaelhouse, under the direction of William le Cordeur, together with former Royal Shakespeare Company actor Paul Spence (Hilton resident), have launched the Midlands’ first ever dramatic society – called the Upstagers Dramatic Club in order to encourage and inspire a passionate love for theatre and to provide classic and nostalgic ongoing theatrical entertainment for PMB and surrounding communities’ audiences. They staged their first production, The Diamond Snow, during July. The next production will be Joan Littlewood’s ‘Oh, What a Lovely War!’ from 12 to 15 August. The Care Bear Project is a community project that uplifts local rural communities by providing employment and much-needed income for the families, and by using the product of their work, the bears, as a means of bringing joy to the children in these communities – many of whom have never received a new toy in their lives. The knitters are all black women, predominantly pensioners, who are most often the mainstay of the family. The Pietermaritzburg Children’s Home provides a home for children who are orphaned and vulnerable, as well as children infected and affected by/with HIV and AIDS. The Butterfly Campaign is aimed at assisting The Salvation Army Joseph Baynes Children’s Home, which cares for children who are abandoned or from abusive or unfit homes. Msunduzi Hospice provides home based care in the greater Msunduzi Municipality. Care is provided free of charge. Care is provided by members of an interdisciplinary team made up of nurses, social workers, memory workers, and care givers. Volunteer doctors provide input at team meetings. Occasional volunteer physiotherapists, complimentary therapists are available to provide insight into patient needs.
