September 16, 2011. Any braai masters out there? Well it’s now time to release your inner boerewors mojo and see the masters in action at the regional finals of the national boerie braai competition on Saturday, September 17.
More than 1000 hopefuls entered the 2011 Shoprite Checkers Championship Boerewors Competition, but only 87 boerewors experts remain standing after facing their competitors in tough regional rounds that took place countrywide during August 2011. These regional winners will now face each other once again in provincial rounds to determine which 10 will go to Sun City in October for a final assault on this year’s famous boerewors crown!
In KwaZulu-Natal, 10 regional winners will bring and braai their secret boerewors at Checkers Gateway in Umhlanga, Durban, starting at 9am. Visitors will be entertained by Jared Sunkel, who will also be MC for the day. Other entertainment includes stilt walkers, jugglers, a mechanical bull and performances by Celtic and High Energy Dancers. Coca Cola, Simba and All Gold, co-sponsors of the competition, will offer promotional activities and sampling of their products. Members of the public will be able to take part in various lucky draws throughout the course of the event, while jumping castles, a merry-go-round, face painting and Simba the Lion will keep the little ones entertained.

- Mfanafuthi Paul Hlomuka from Durban
- Denesh Devpruth from Phoenix
Top food experts from the South African Chefs Association (SACA) will act as official judges in the provincial rounds. The 2011 Shoprite Checkers Championship Boerewors will also receive the South African Chefs Association’s stamp of approval, to ensure that the ingredients for South Africa’s best loved braaiwors are of the highest quality.
Winners of the provincial rounds each walk away with R2000 Shoprite or Checkers meat vouchers and gift hampers. All provincial winners will also enjoy a fun-filled weekend at Sun City where they join the other nine finalists for the grand finale on 8 October. The 2011 Shoprite Checkers Boerewors Champion will not only walk away with the sought after Championship Boerewors-crown, but also drive away in a brand-new Toyota Hilux 2.7 Double Cab Raised Body Raider.
The country’s many loyal boerewors lovers can meanwhile start preparing for yet another taste sensation, because the winning recipe boerewors will hit the shelves of Shoprite, Checkers and Checkers Hyper stores country wide, on October 14.
