The Silly Season demands a fun-filled show and the large audience at the theatre was not disappointed. From the opening number – ‘Crocodile Rock’ – to the close of the show, the vibe was green for go and members of the audience got involved in this slick, fast paced show.
The fun-loving, ever young Gee Jays, comprising Gary McKenzie, Grant Bell and John Didlick were ably accompanied by the talented musicians, Andy Turrell on guitar, Jill Murraybrown on bass guitar, Francois Hardy on drums and Musical Director, Calli Thomson on keyboards as well as vocals.
Frequent involvement with the receptive audience who responded to the spirit of the evening, made for good vibes throughout the performance. The show highlighted 70’s music and included artist such as Ballyhoo, Rabbit, Copperfield, Clearwater Revival, Mungo Jerry, The Bee Gees, Elvis, Bob Marley and Willy and the Poorboys. Interspersed with foot-tapping, hand clapping songs, were unforgettable Springbok Radio adverts of the 1970’s such as for ‘Chappies Bubble Gum’, ‘Old Spice Aftershave – the mark of a MAN’, ‘Lexington – THAT’S the one’, ‘No Place to Hide’, ‘Taxi’, Squad Cars’ (Squaddies!!), and ‘The Men from the Ministry’, proving that with all of us remembering the words of these snippets, people really DO listen to adverts!
If songs such as ‘Grease Lightning’ ‘The Time Walk’, ‘Old Time Rock ‘n Roll’, ‘Bad Moon Rising’, ‘Mello Yellow’, ‘Suspicious Minds’, ‘The Wonder of Love’, ‘Long Legged Woman dressed in Black’, ‘Man on the Moon’, Vat hom Dawie’, ‘Clap your hands and stamp your feet’, Is this the way to Amarillo’ and ‘The Candyman’ get your feet tapping, then this is a show for you.
In spite of this being a journey down memory lane, the younger set in the audience obviously enjoyed themselves fully, so young and old – get to this show and have a great festive season!
