The next meeting of the Diabetes Conversation Programme, a series of monthly educational workshops on diabetes, will be held on 28 November at 10am in the Training Room at Hillcrest Private Hospital.
The programme will cover topics such as ‘Managing my Diabetes’, ‘Diabetes and a Healthy Lifestyle’, ‘Starting Insulin’ and ‘Experiencing Life with Diabetes’ and also provides the opportunity to ask questions and chat with other diabetics.
Created by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and other organisations, the initiative has been implemented across the globe. The programme at Hillcrest Private Hospital is run by pharmaceutical company, Lilly.
According to Diabetes South Africa, there is a worldwide explosion of diabetes and developing countries like South Africa are taking the worst hit.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) predicts that in South Africa, the numbers will triple in the next fifteen years.
Research shows that approximately 4-6 million people in South Africa have diabetes and that most of these people are unaware they have the condition.
Around the world it has been shown that patient education and motivation reduces the cost of diabetes care as well as dramatically reducing the risk of serious diabetes-related complications.
