Gold Circle said the decision to pay out six places on this year’s Vodacom Durban July, to be held on Saturday, was taken because “thousands of once-a-year punters bet on the main event and this will give them a better chance of winning than they have had in the past with only four place payouts”.

Those keen on a flutter should not overlook the impressive Igugu, an Australian bred three-year-old filly to be piloted by Anthony Delpech (of Mount Edgecombe) and trained by multiple July winner Mike de Kock. Some of Mike De Kock’s previous triumphs included with Ipi Tombe, Greys Inn and a brilliant run by Bold Silvano. Also lurking is former winner Big City Life.
While Igugu faces a tough task as a young horse against a quality field, there are very confident noises coming out of the De Kock camp.
Other names being thrown into the hat include accomplished J&B Met winner Past Master, Bravura, three-year-old colt The Apache and former race winner Big City Life, trained by Glen Kotzen, ridden this year by Greg Cheyne, and who is in great form.
And what about The Apache? Owner Gavin van Zyl rates his chances and reckons he’ll have no problem staying the distance, and will quicken at the turn and over the home straight. Might be a smart pick on the day.
