More than 1 000 matriculants from the west of Ethekwini were gathered at Embo Community Hall on Saturday to access post-school education and training opportunities for year 2013.
The event was organised by the Embo Business and Employment Hub (EBEH) and seen by many participants as a career fair with a difference. Unlike many similar events, which are often held to disseminate careers information, this one created a working platform where learners actually lodged applications with various institutions at one venue, thereby saving the cost and time of travelling from one institution to another.
The Fair attracted pupils and school leavers from the communities of Emolweni, KwaNgcolosi, Embo, KwaNyuswa and Inchanga. Among institutions which attended the Fair were Durban University of Technology, Success Training institute, UNISA, Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP), Ethekwini Skills Development Unit, Universal College Outcomes, Creative Arts College, DCC Campus, Berea Technikon and MANCOSA.
Sfiso Mnguni, EBEH Centre Manager, thanked all the stakeholders for their involvement in the programme. “It’s been a beautiful day. Rural pupils who never would have been able to afford the cost of travelling in search of tertiary institutions or realised the importance of making applications now rather than late have had the opportunity to secure a place for post-school education and training next year.”
“The Fair has not only given learners a chance, but also created an opportunity for unemployed youth work as volunteers on this day, following a pre-event preparation training conducted at EBEH offices.”
