Fire destroys home

On the evening of Friday 8 June 2012, the home of Stockville informal settlement resident Mr Mathaithai Dlamini burned to the ground, along with everything he owned.

Councillor Rick Crouch visited the site of the fire and donated some clothing, bedding and toiletries to Mr Dlamini. “I received a call informing me of the incident, so my wife immediately gathered some items from around our house and bought a few items from the store, which I took with me when I went to visit.”

“When I arrived, a very dejected Mr Dlamini was sifting through the ashes trying to salvage anything he could – with no success. It was very sad. A neighbour, Florence Xaba, has kindly taken Mr Dlamini in and given him a roof over his head until he can start over,” said Councillor Crouch.

“I would like to take this opportunity to request that if anyone out there has any spare items laying around that they would like to donate to Mr Dlamini, please contact me by email or phone.”

“With the weather we are having, this is not a great time to be in this situation. To add insult to injury, Mr Dlamini is unemployed and earns spare change from his neighbours by collecting water from the communal water stand pipe,” added Councillor Crouch.
