Float Wellness SA is the first Float and Sensory Deprivation Therapy Spa in Durban.
Float therapy, also known as isolation therapy or sensory deprivation therapy, is the popular practice of spending an hour or more floating peacefully in water, saturated with Epsom salt, inside a float pod or float room. The floating effect is achieved through the water and Epsom salt solution, which makes the water so buoyant that you’re floating instead of sinking. To further the effect, most distractions have been removed such as light or visual stimuli, sense of touch due to the water being the same temperature as your skin, and sense of smell due to the Epsom salts nullifying any other scents, leaving you with just the feeling of floating!
Some Benefits of Float Therapy include:
Stress relief and treating stress related illness
Float therapy is said to be an antidote to stress, thanks to it providing a deep sense of relaxation and inner peace. Floatation therapy may help treat stress-related illness, including fibromyalgia.
Reduced anxiety
Float therapy can help with anxiety disorders – researchers from Sweden’s Karlstad University recently tested its effects on anxiety disorder symptoms. They found that symptoms had significantly changed for the better following 12 sessions of the therapy over a four month period.
Overcoming addiction
Research has found that sensory deprivation therapy can be a versatile, cost-effective treatment and is effective in modifying some addictive behaviour.
Improve sleep
Research has found that floating just two hours a week for two weeks may bring improvement in insomnia symptoms.
Pain relief
Both patient testimonials and multiple studies have suggested that float therapy might serve as a natural pain killer, as the primary way it helps relieve pain is by evoking the relaxation response, which is known to improve recovery and ease tense muscles. The anti-gravity environment allows the spine to decompress and elongate.
Magnesium
According to the World Health Organisation, some three-quarters of adults don’t get enough magnesium in their diet, a mineral that’s essential to many body processes. A lack of magnesium has been associated with many different adverse health effects. The body can absorb magnesium from the Epsom salt-infused water.
“I tried out the float pod recently and absolutely loved the experience. I left there feeling very relaxed, destressed and much healthier. It really does work and makes you feel so refreshed and invigorated. I will definitely be back again and would recommend that you also give it a try – whether you have health issues or not, this is a must!” – Victoria Arthur.
