Hirsch’s Umhlanga recently donated an energy efficient microwave to the Animal Anti-Cruelty League (ACL) in Durban.
The Animal Anti-Cruelty League’s Jess Currell said, “This will help to warm up the puppies’ food and milk. Some of them are only a few weeks old and need extra special care.”

The Animal Anti-Cruelty League was established in 1956. According to its website, it is the second largest independent animal welfare organisation in South Africa, and relies on the generosity of its donors and the animal-loving public for survival.
Its mission is to prevent and eliminate all cruelty to animals, whether arising from ignorance, neglect or deliberate cruelty, and to alleviate suffering by cruelty.
The Animal Anti-Cruelty League receives many calls daily from members of the public, concerned about the welfare of specific animals. The organisation’s inspectorate is on hand to attend to all complaints within 24 hours. While education is the preferred means of dealing with the issue of cruelty to animals, before intervention, there are certain cases where inspectors have to confiscate animals.
