Jozini Tiger Lodge

By The Ridge Magazine31/05/20102 Mins Read

The main attraction – other than beautifully decorated rooms, top-notch food and the sounds of silence – at the recently opened Jozini Tiger Lodge is the world class view

After a leisurely four-hour trip up the North Coast from Durban, and a saunter through the rugged Lebombo Mountains, we arrived for our visit feeling a little weary but ready to explore. The first sight that greets you as you enter the hotel lobby is a spectacular view of the dam which spreads out about a hundred metres below the lodge. The design cleverly maximises this effect by having floor to ceiling windows – this was definitely a “wow” moment.

Jozini Tiger Lodge is a quiet hotel set in a calming location above the huge expanse of the Jozini Dam (which covers more than 16 000ha), the perfect place for a quiet weekend away, or if you’re in the mood, to take part in activities and enjoy the many local attractions. We were staying in one of the loft rooms, which had all the quality finishings and facilities expected and, again, spectacular views.

For us, it was a mix of much-needed chill-out time, and an opportunity to make use of the wellness centre and explore the dam. A soothing massage and visit to the steam room soon eased all our worries away . . . I was so chilled out I could barely stay awake.

Our sunset cruise was marred by a blanket of cloud but we were still awed by the scale of the dam as we sipped on a chilled beverage and enjoyed the gentle sway of the boat.

There were a couple of teething problems with the service but the friendliness and bright smiles of the staff (a very high percentage of whom have been recruited from the local community) overcame any such problems. Dinner and breakfast, in particular, were occasions to look forward to as the chefs treated us to delicious and well thought out meals.
