The Guardian newspaper in the UK reported that the library at Stony Stratford – on the outskirts of Milton Keynes – looked like the aftermath of a crime, its staff presiding over emptied shelves. This was after library users had checked out all the books . . . about 16 000 volumes.
With the library under threat of closure, a Facebook campaign was launched in which every library user was urged to pick their full entitlement of 15 books, take them away and keep them for a week.

The Guardian commented: “The empty shelves, as the library users want to demonstrate, represent the gaping void in their community if Milton Keynes council gets its way.”
Umhlanga’s library is to close indefinitely on February 28 according to notices posted on the library doors. Residents have expressed their unhappiness and disappointment at the loss of the facility.
