Paddy Collins and 60 intrepid runners from the Highbury community put their bodies to the test, covering 75km over soft sand in a relay of legend – the Maputuland Challenge.
Now in its fifth year, the challenge began as a way to raise money and give back to the community of Bhanga Nek, north of Sodwana Bay, but has developed into so much more. “The experience and camaraderie is something else,” says Paddy. “We already have people signed up for next year!”
Special mention must be made of Sean Eigerman, who is now in Matric, and has taken part in all five runs.
This year, the team raised R87 000, which was presented to Wildlands Conservation Trust and Careline Crisis Centre at a special event at Summerveld Country Lodge. “A big thank you to all our sponsors, without whom this wouldn’t have been possible,” said Paddy.
