Midlands Meander

Fern Hill: Foodie Escape

by Hayley Dennyson

Set at the start of the Midlands Meander, just 80km from Hillcrest, Fern Hill Hotel is a fabulous option for your special event, conference or even a quick night away, with delicious food and friendly, efficient service.

Owned by the Poltera family since 1989, the site has been a popular resting spot since the 1800s when Trekkers would stop before tackling the treacherous Umgeni Gorge. Today, it’s a vibrant destination, with 27 en suite bedrooms, three conference rooms, private dining facilities and a chapel for weddings. For a treat, why not book the Presidential Suite, which was built for Nelson Mandela’s visit in 1996?

Food is a focal point at the hotel and fully-accredited training college, where staff and students work to the motto “Striving for the ultimate in service excellence”. Chef Alex Poltera has a fresh approach to food, producing dishes that challenge and delight the diner, with delicate layers of flavour and contemporary plating. Ingredients include locally-sourced trout and rabbit – “an under-utilised ingredient that is both delicious and healthy,” Alex explains. The young chef has developed quite a reputation among non-meat eaters, elevating vegetables to new heights and thrilling this long-neglected demographic.

The menu at the 60-seater Snooty Fox restaurant is extensive and contains classic dishes as well as new and exciting ideas, such as the signature brioche burgers and sous vide pork (pictured above), which got a double thumbs up from our group. Regular theme nights, including a curry buffet and Sunday carvery, draw hungry crowds. Vegans are also well catered for, with interesting options (plural) for starter, main and dessert. The outdoor dining area is a hit on warm days, with live music on Fridays and Saturdays.
