At about 2am Saturday morning my wife rushed our daughter to the hospital in severe pain. In the rush to leave she left took the wrong purse and did not have any cash or cards on her. She did however have our Discovery Medical Aid card as we keep one in the car in case of accidents etc. When she got to the hospital she was told that she had to pay R150 to be admitted to casualty and R450 to open a file (itself a joke) The discovery plan we are on cover 100% of private hospital costs which she told the person dealing with them. The answer was quite simply if you don’t pay that then you must leave and go somewhere else. My wife tried to explain the medical aid covers the cost but the staff were not interested and just kept telling them that if you don’t pay that then you must go.
They left and went down to Westville who didn’t even ask for any details until my daughter had been seen and stabilised where after they took the personal details without asking for any money as the medical aid covers it.
Section 27(3) of the Constitution provides that no one may be refused emergency medical treatment. The fact that Westville had my daughter straight in on a drip and looked at within 5 minutes of getting there in my view means that there is a medical emergency and your hospital did not even try to determine whether it was an emergency or not.
Tricia Stoole from Hillcrest Private Hospital, had the following to say:
“We sincerely regret that this happened and the complaint has been escalated through to the manager of the Casualty Unit for investigation and action will be taken to ensure that this does not happen again.
It is our policy never to turn an emergency patient away from the casualty Unit. All patients are attended to. Only once the patient has been stabilised, if necessary, will the patient be transferred to another facility (usually at our expense).”
Issued on behalf of Hillcrest Private Hospital:
At Hillcrest Private Hospital, our customer-centric philosophy means we endeavour to serve our community through combining high quality medical care and facilities with compassionate caring. Our busy casualty unit sees over 800 patients every month, across the triage range.
It is our policy never to turn away an emergency patient from the Casualty Unit. The patient will be stabililised and only then if necessary, transferred to another facility. Our track record shows that we do put the patient first, regardless of their financial status, and there are many patients who can and have testified to this.
There are costs involved in using a private healthcare facility. But our costs are comparable with (and in some instances less than) those charged by other facilities. Most medical aids cover emergency admissions but there are some costs that are not covered by medical aids. Patients are always made aware of these.
Justifiably, an incident such as this is extremely upsetting for the patient, but this is not our normal policy and certainly not the standard we expect from our staff. This type of incident is taken very seriously and appropriate action has been taken to ensure that this does not happen again.
We have responded privately to Mr Blindell.
