Since the production of the 5 cent coin ceased on 1 April 2012, the Rhino meets Reality campaign set out to collect all the unwanted coins. Their goal was to raise R20 000 for Project Rhino KZN. That’s 400 000 5 cent coins!
The Crescent at Umhlanga Ridge hosted the campaign over six weeks with the prize giving taking place on Friday 15 June.
In conjunction with the 5 cent coin collection, a rhino-inspired art competition ran between the local schools with weekly finalists chosen and the overall winners were awarded prizes at the prize giving.
The support from the community was overwhelming and they have already more than doubled the goal to raise R20 000. As soon as Nedbank has verified it, the final amount will be released.
The art winners were:
- Grade R winner: Megan Govender, Anamika Suknandan and Owen Pillay of Northglen Primary
- Grade 1 Winner: Sijabulile Khati of Glenashley Junior Primary
- Grade 2 Winner: Aimee Miller of Glenashley Junior Primary
- Grade 3 Winner: Aarya Chumanlall of Atholton Primary
- Grade 4 Winner: Carolyn Rheeder of Umhlali Primary School
- Grade 5 Winner: Deslin Govender of Durban North Primary
