What a weekend!

By The Ridge Magazine20/06/20123 Mins Read

What a wonderful Durban weekend we all had.

Top Gear was in town and what a marvellous time was had by all. The sun shone on cue, the town was looking magnificent, the cars roared round our streets, and we all partied like it was summer. How fantastic to see the Mercedes AMG F1 car zooming parallel to the Indian Ocean, and every car enthusiast in the province and beyond seemed to be there to take full advantage.

I went on Saturday, and loved every minute. The vintage Mercedes Gullwing (pictured above) was my favourite, as I have a picture of my father next to his in London in the 1940s. Amazing to see it in the flesh.

We dropped into Jaipur Palaceand had the buffet on the way back, looking over the ocean, perfect.

On Sunday we were at a breakfast at Green with Envy down in town in Vause Road. The sun shone again, and we sipped champagne and ate the most delicious food. If you are ever looking for a lovely way to spend a few hours, I recommend it. I came away with a tray of mixed herb seedlings for R15, amazing value, and a granadilla bush.

Off we went in the sunshine to the beach and a couple of hours sharding (picking up sea glass), lunch for Father’s Day at Remo’s, and we were done and ready for a lazy Sunday afternoon. Is it my imagination or is there more and more to do in this lovely place?

Next weekend we have the Boat Show, which every self respecting sea lover should go and visit. It is full of amazing events, you can take a ferry out into the harbour, eat at Cafe Fish, and get to know this bit of town that has really been going through a resurgence recently.

We all love the Cape Town V&A Marina, but unless we get down to our very own harbour it won’t keep growing. I love it, best bunny chows in Durban, beautiful boats, the Oyster Bar, and for the duration of the Boat Show from 22 to 24 June, the Royal Natal, and Point Yacht Clubs are open to the public. Go in and have lunch, and imagine the place in its heyday.

Durban is one of the cheapest and best places in the world to learn to sail, and this is an amazing opportunity to chat to Sail Africa about what they offer. There will be a regatta, and Durban Duck Day on Sunday with a chance to win R100 000 if your duck wins!

Add in dissections by the Sharks Board on both days, and you really have no excuse to go and see what living by the ocean really means.
