June 22, 2011. The sardine run 2011 continues to hot up; one of our readers reported nets being pulled in about 2km south of the Protea Hotel, near Illovo Beach around midday today.

Plenty birds were seen dive bombing the shoal, seen as a forerunner to a massive shoal near Port Grosvenor on the Wild Coast. Later on a healthy sized net was reported pulled out at Karridene.
According to Operations Director of the KZN Sharks Board, Mike Anderson-Reade, it’s quite possible that 2011 could see a bumper sardine run, if the conditions remain favourable and the large shoal on the Wild Coast heads north.
Yesterday fish were still commanding around R600 a basket. Conditions today were reported to be fairly calm with a light north-easterly wind.
The KZN Sharks Board reported that the fish currently near Amanzimtoti could arrive off Durban within the next day or two. “The fish currently on the upper south coast and approaching Durban will probably disappear once they pass Durban. However, there is still a lot of activity down at Port St Johns which is likely to move up the coast soon,” said Anderson-Reade.
