Alan Job is back from Australia and has been persuaded to become WESSA Highway Branch’s first speaker at the regular monthly indoor meetings at Westville Central Library on Friday 10 January at 7pm.
The subject of the talk is “Tasmania, Australia’s Island State: A Photographic Journey”.
Approximately 300km x 300km and situated in the “Roaring Forties”, Tasmania is very different from mainland Australia.
At least a third is designated as World Heritage Areas.
The South West is a huge temperate rainforest, almost inaccessible by road. Visitors have to fly over or take to the rivers to explore this completely natural unspoilt area.
The coast line is equally pristine, while much of the centre and eastern side is as lush and green as any Emerald Isle.
Its history is just as fascinating, with thousands of luckless criminals transported to Tasmania from Britain in the 1800s, where they endured poor conditions. And yet the people set about building bridges, roads and even their own prisons.
