In celebration of Arbour Week, Kloof Conservancy will be hosting Tree Day 2013 on Sunday 1 September at the Interpretative Centre in Krantzkloof Nature Reserve.
Dr David Johnson will be running a course on identifying trees using the key he has developed, which is used in conjunction with Pooley’s Trees of Eastern South Africa by Richard Boon.
The course will take place in the Interpretative Centre with a field trip to Pete and Brigid Turner’s garden in Forest Hills, where there are many different trees to identify.
The cost is R100 per person, which covers the key booklet and tea/coffee. The course will get underway at 9:45am.
There will also be fun family/children’s activities taking place from 11am, with storytelling from Peter Court, art, creative writing, tree potting and planting, and a short guided walk to see the African Crowned Eagle nest in the nature reserve. Cost is R20 per person.
Wors rolls/salad rolls and cooldrinks will be on sale at the tuckshop.

that the Earth is a living being. It is time we begin to rregad it as such. The question is not how many of us can survive on the planet, but instead how many will it take before we kill Her. Our growth is the growth of a cancer, and it threatens the life of the living being in which it is occurring.Until we incorporate that kind of thinking, all of our solutions are really only attempts to make it possible to put more of us on Earth’s surface. We continue to think just like cancer cells would think.Alternatively, of course, we could be working toward expanding off the planet , but there is no future in that unless we succeed in slowing down the pace at which we are growing and destroying our environment, anyway. But there is a vital difference in the attitude of slowing it down in order to gain time to get off the planet, and making the resources that we have here on the planet extend a little farther so that we can continue our exploitation of Earth as if we are incapable of killing all life that exists here.
