The annual Drummond Conservancy Walk on the Wildside will take place on Sunday 28 July from 10am to 3pm at Mbabala Farm, Buffelsdrift Road, making a change from the usual Spring-time event.
Due to the probability of rain, other Spring garden events and rugby fixtures, 2013 will see Walk on the Wildside hosted in mid-Winter, which will allow for a refreshing change of scenery and plant-life.
This year’s line-up includes some fantastic speakers, including Steve Woodhall talking about butterflies, the ever-funny Pat McKrill speaking on frogs and snakes, and Steve Smit from Monkey helpline. These speakers should teach us a great deal about our rural-urban fauna and how we can respect one another and live together.
There will be two on-hour walks up to the beautiful waterfall above the James’s farm, lead by Shu and Dr Joy Coleman, to give you a good perspective of the natural flora in Drummond. If you have never been on the walk, you traverse the edge of the krantz and walk next to the waterfall. Great fun and a really good challenge!
For the children, there is lots of fun – Groovy balls will be here to roll you along the grass like a hamster, you can have a pony ride or two or three and also try your hand at pellet gun target shooting. There is a jumping castle, if that was not enough fun for you.
Plus, this year there will be a REAL Dinosaur egg on show – one that was found right here in the Drummond Valley!
The tea garden offers cake and muffins for the peckish at tea time, as well as Beef and Bean bunnie chows, samoosas and boerewors rolls for lunchtime. Sit and enjoy the treats of your choice while listening to the Steve Cresswell band.
Gardeners will love the wide range of indigenous plants for sale. “We have 10 growers,” says organiser Sue James, “and have sourced a wonderful variety of plants, grasses, trees and unusual gems. And while you are frantically shopping for plants, browse through our line-up of organic ‘green’ and homemade stalls.”
There’s so much fun to be had – all in one day, 10am to 3pm. Come and meet your fellow valley dwellers and let’s get our community spirit going.
