What’s the first step to a fitter, healthier lifestyle?

Ask an expert: Grant Van Niekerk and Clint Hall own LiveFit

Cut out bad sugars! Constant sugar intake can be addictive due to the massive dopamine release in the brain. Exercising can have the same effect, so rather move more frequently to reduce the cravings.

Before sugar enters the bloodstream, it is broken into two simple sugars – glucose and fructose. The thing with fructose is, it is metabolised by the liver. Fructose will then be turned into glycogen and stored in the liver until we need it. That is fine if we take in small amounts, such as from fruit, or if we have just finished an exercise session. However, if the liver is full of glycogen (much more common), any additional fructose intake will strain the liver and be turned into fat.

Cutting out the sweet stuff can also improve your ability to lose weight. When you eat too much sugar, whether you’re exercising or not, your body will always use the most readily available fuel, which is generally sugar or – when converted in the body – blood glucose. Therefore, you won’t be using your fat cells as energy, making it more difficult to lose weight.

Healthy living is a lifestyle – a combination of regular exercise and good eating habits. We named our health and fitness centre LiveFit to promote and educate people on living a more sustainable, holistic, healthier life.

It can be hard to initiate a lifestyle change, but we believe in you. All you have to do is start.
