Local ‘Star Swim Teacher of the Year Award 2018’ recipient, Odette Randelhoff of Seals Swimming Club, was recently asked to address all swim teachers on her successful approach to teaching learn-to-swim.
“It was a huge honour to share my passion. Sharing in the joy of a learner grasping the skill to float is so exciting! This is the essence of learning to swim. There needs to be a bond of trust between swimmer and teacher – and a patient understanding by the parents. The learner must feel safe and secure in the pool whilst being active throughout their lessons,” says Odette. “A busy swimmer is a learning swimmer.”

Swim teaching is a profession and ALL swim teachers should be qualified and accredited annually through enrolling in annual First Aid/CPR courses, obtaining an annual police clearance, attending workshops regularly as well as being registered with Swimming South Africa.
“To be treated like a professional, us swim teachers need to be professional by being legal. This annual certification needs to be displayed at the learn-to-swim venue,” concludes Odette.
